Our criminal defense attorneys will conduct an evaluation of the record to determine the best course of action.  There are a number of avenues of relief upon challenging a conviction.

Grounds may include insufficient evidence, improper jury instructions, and ineffective assistance of counsel.  Criminal appeals may also involve a motion for new trial and a motion to challenge the sentence.  Massachusetts law places strict time limitations for criminal appeals.

Sometimes the last opportunity for justice for a convicted person is through a petition for a writ of habeas corpus.  The Great Writ is available to individuals who have been convicted in either state or federal court.

However, under the Clinton Administration, Congress imposed a one-year statute of limitations for the first time on this fundamental remedy.  This means that, with only a few exceptions, a person convicted in either state or federal court must start his or her habeas corpus litigation within a year after the conviction becomes final.

Our expertise in this very difficult field of practice offers the defendant who wants to pursue this remedy the best opportunity for success.  Our appellate practice is designed to maximize the client’s habeas corpus opportunities in case that avenue becomes necessary.
